A powerful live tribute celebrating the music, legacy and Liverpool roots of Billy Fury by Colin Paul and The Persuaders.
Billy Fury – The Story & The Songs is a deeply personal and authentic live tribute celebrating one of Britain’s greatest rock ’n’ roll pioneers, performed at the legendary Cavern Club, Liverpool.
Although Billy Fury never performed at the Cavern Club himself, his legacy belongs firmly in Liverpool. Born Ronald Wycherley, Billy Fury helped kick down the door for British rock ’n’ roll, paving the way for countless artists who followed. His influence still resonates through the city’s musical DNA.
A Journey That Began with Loss and Led to Legacy
When Billy Fury passed away in January 1983, the loss was profound. Like Elvis Presley and John Lennon before him, another hero was gone. But Billy felt closer. Liverpool-born. British. Someone you felt you might one day meet.
That connection never disappeared.
Throughout the 1980s, the music continued to inspire. In 1988, The Stormbeats were formed and quickly became a celebrated live act, performing Billy Fury’s music across the UK and winning Manchester Band of the Year on several occasions.
A Remarkable Personal Connection
A turning point came with an unexpected phone call from Albert Wycherley, Billy Fury’s brother. After hearing the band on the radio, Albert invited them to perform at a Billy Fury charity night in Liverpool. He would host the show and sing his brother’s songs himself, backed by popular Liverpool band The Dions, alongside The Undertakers, with Liverpool legend Frankie Connor as compère.
From that moment, the tribute became something far deeper than a performance.
The band went on to perform at the Billy Fury Tribute Weekends in Blackpool from 1992 onwards, events that continue today at venues including The Savoy Hotel, Blackpool, The Prince of Wales Hotel, Southport, and The Liner Hotel, Liverpool. Not a single Billy Fury weekend has been missed.
For many years, the band also had the honour of backing Albert Wycherley (Jason Eddie) at shows across the UK until his passing in 2011.
